As a ongoing side project for my next gen course, i wanted to start and build a 2d platforming game that i could work on and improve while i learned new skills and apply them to this project. I decided to start small and try to get fully working game mechanics with graphics and maybe sound before looking into fleshing out levels and ideas. I want to look into getting mechanics like an attack, health points, a shield to block attacks and enemies that take a couple hits to beat. These feel like realisable goals, as i can either look online or ask peers if i can’t get a mechanic to work right.
The game would feature a player controlling a knight in a child’s imagination, defeating enemies or collecting items to progress through levels. I decided to set it in a child’s imagination as i can then have a more childlike and cartoony art style, which i hope makes creating assets easier. I could give the assets a kinda doodled in look to them to help The player would have controls like: running, jumping, maybe double jumping, attacking, defending, a health meter and things like that. I hope to create a more professional looking game than what i have made previously, and i would like something big to show off in my portfolio since i lean more towards game design than anything else.
